7 Common Types of Workplace Spills and How to Prepare for Them

A leaking drum in a warehouse, hydraulic fluid beneath machinery and a container of cleaning chemical knocked over during maintenance are all workplace spills, but they may require very different responses.

Knowing what substances are present on site can help businesses prepare suitable spill-control equipment, procedures and training before an incident happens.

Here are seven common types of workplace spills and some practical points to consider when preparing for them.

1. Oil spills

Oil spills are common in workshops, manufacturing facilities, warehouses and locations where vehicles or machinery are operated.

They can involve:

  • Engine oil
  • Hydraulic oil
  • Lubricating oil
  • Gear oil
  • Compressor oil

Even relatively small leaks can spread across smooth floors and create a slip hazard. Oil may also reach drains, equipment or pedestrian routes if it is not contained quickly.

Oil-only absorbents are designed for hydrocarbon-based liquids and are particularly useful where oil needs to be separated from water.

Typical products may include oil-only absorbent pads, socks, rolls and complete spill kits.

2. Fuel spills

Diesel, petrol and other fuels may be present around vehicle fleets, generators, workshops, construction equipment and fuel-storage areas.

4. Water and water-based liquid spills

Water, coolant, beverages, cleaning solutions and other water-based liquids can still create significant operational and slip hazards.

Common sources include:

  • Cleaning activities
  • Damaged containers
  • Roof leaks

  • Entrances during wet weather

General-purpose absorbents are commonly used for water and a range of non-aggressive workplace liquids.

5. Coolant and maintenance-fluid spills

Workshops and manufacturing environments may use a variety of coolants, cutting fluids and other maintenance liquids.

7. Unknown spills

An unidentified liquid should be treated differently from a familiar maintenance spill.

If workers cannot confidently identify what has leaked, they should not simply select an absorbent and begin cleaning it up.

  • Try to identify the source from a safe position
  • Check nearby containers and labels
  • Inform the responsible person
  • Follow the site's emergency procedure

Matching spill-control equipment to the risk

There is no single spill kit that is automatically suitable for every workplace.

When deciding what equipment to keep on site, consider:

  • The substances stored and used
  • The maximum likely spill volume
  • Where spills are most likely to happen
  • Whether the area is indoors or outdoors
  • Nearby drains and sensitive areas

Keep spill equipment ready to use

Spill-control equipment should not simply be purchased and forgotten.

  • Absorbents are clean and dry
  • Previous usage has been replenished
  • Labels and instructions remain readable
  • Disposal bags and supporting equipment are present
